Some projects are incredibly important for the community. Our recent application seeking planning permission for solar panels for Sandford Parks Lido in Cheltenham is one of them.
In September this year, the Lido’s electricity contract expires. As a result of soaring energy costs, the current tariff is predicted to increase bills from £51,00 to £178,000 per annum. Following a recent sustainability survey, the trustees identified a range of measure to secure the future of the Lido. Initially, the trustees planned to install solar panels on the roof of the grade II listed plant room.
SF Planning supported the Lido through the application process. The proposal faced objections from Cheltenham Borough Council‘s Conservation Officer and, therefore went before members of the Planning Committe last week.
Unanimous Support
We’re delighted that committee members unanimously voted in support of the application. Members recognised the need for heritage buildings to play their part in sustainability measures, not only for carbon reduction, but also to financially protect important community assets like the Lido.
The committee echoed the opinions of members of the community. Overwhelming support for the application through public comments was registered on the Council’s planning and development site.

We particularly enjoyed hearing from members of the planning committee, as they shared their memories of the lido. Some members have been swimming there since early childhood, and now visit with their grandchildren.
